Lou Stovall, Strong Men All
Jacob Lawrence (an artist), Sterling A. Brown (an educator), and Toussaint L’Overture (a liberator), all dedicated their lives to setting Black people free. Through studying the work and the continued legacy of these three men, we can understand the strength of their commitment to bring to the attention of all people the right of Blacks to have their labor, talent, and ability to persevere in the face of hardship honored in a society in which they were not included. Jacob painted their presence in a world that held them separate, just as Sterling wrote their stories in a world that assumed their literary inferiority. Toussaint gave his life fighting against two foreign governments that sought to establish slavery as a means of economic domination.
