My Panel61 painting is an example of one of the many issues that women faced during the migration era and beyond. In it, one can see a woman’s face looking towards a set of ascending stairs leading to a dollar sign. This symbolizes how many steps women had to and continue to have to climb to obtain equal wages. During the Great Migration, many African American women worked as house workers or maids for whites. They were mostly hired because they accepted low wages while, on the other hand, white women rarely accepted these wages unless they were Immigrants. Women today, especially women of color, still suffer from pay inequity and discrimination. The gender gap has had an everlasting impact on the amount women are paid for the same jobs men are working.
