Your #Panel61
The story of our migration is ongoing. What does #Panel61 look like to you?
In the final, 60th panel of The Migration Series, Jacob Lawrence leaves us with the words “And the migrants kept coming.” Today, more than 70 years later, Lawrence’s epic narrative continues to have powerful reverberations.

For my #PANEL61, I’ve created many different examples of how the Great Migration has had an impact on African Americans and their community today. It shows all of the different successful things that African Americans have done over the years for their community. In the painting, the phrase “Black Excellence”- bolded - is a very powerful word to African Americans because of the meaning behind it - Black Success. It stands for the struggles and successful stories of people in the past that migrated out of the South and created opportunities for the well-known African Americans of today. In my painting, I have displayed many well-known brands, TV shows, and African American celebrities that have an impact on the black community today. I have chosen these examples because of the change that they have set for both the black community and people of different background, which shows that over the years African Americans began to overcome the struggle of being pushed aside and not being seen as an equal to society. Some of the examples that I have displayed is “Uncle Ben’s Rice”, which was created by a African American male that grew rice and started a business off it. He later changed his name to Uncle Ben to expand his business. This rice continues to be one of the most popular in the country. Another example is former President Barack Obama, who was the United States’ first African American President that served 8 years in office and was loved and inspired people of all different races.
